Everything matters. You dont need to wear designer brands but you should be put together if you expect people to perceive you as a leader and someone who can be put in front of an audience.
Yes casual is fine just presentable. Plenty of partners wear jeans/sneakers etc
At your level, your team lead should be directing that. Depending on what you have built at your firm will determine if they will let it slide. General sentiment is still to dress professionally for client calls and visits. If you are in an industry that prefers more casual, or you have built a technical or personal brand that fits a more casual style, then that would allow for it but it is not the default.
There ya go, put a blazer on and the problems go away.
My point is that it does matter.
Appearance does matter and you need to consider how you want to be perceived in what you choose to wear. How much it matters depends on the situation and your audience.
You don’t need to go overboard with expensive items (and it can actually be tacky to do this at junior levels), but you do need to present yourself well. You are a representation of your firm, its culture, its prestige and its professionalism.
I wear a blazer most days because I like to do so. I do what I want in this regard and it’s not the norm at all. I’ve been told I have executive presence. I might still have executive presence in a polo but the blazer certainly adds to it in my mind.
I think hair maintenance and styling, minimal amount of natural look makeup for women, facial hair grooming for men is important. We had an intern with blue hair that had grown out - the hair was literally the first thing I noticed when we met.
Agree with all the sentiments that it is all about personal brand and your ability. The appropriate standard is dress at or above the client you are meeting/talking to. In office, dress at how you want someone to perceive you but within whatever guidelines your office has. I work from home and am super casual but it’s the brand I have built. I am good enough at my job that people allow it but definitely know that the more uppity partners don’t approve. That will stunt my progression but it’s more valuable to me to stay true to myself. I also clean up very well when in front of clients so another reason I get a pass
