How often do you do 1-on-1 career discussions with your supervisor? I rarely talk with him and he’s not really in the know on my projects because he has his own projects as well as has to support younger staff. How do you make sure your accomplishments are getting noticed without being annoying about it?

My immediate manager and I don't have a lot of conversations day to day, in the normal course of events. As along as the work is getting done there's not a lot to talk about, I guess that's the best way to describe it. Someone explained to me early on that I shouldn't feel neglected or ignored. That's actually a good sign as attention would generally come if something had been going wrong.

I have monthly 1-on-1 meetings with my manager. In those meetings we discuss how things are going for me, if I need help with anything, or if there is anything of interest I want to discuss with him. I use those as opportunities to catch him up on everything I am doing including accomplishments and such.

The Home Depot (from a previous vendor)

Cons:

- Interfaced with a few different people, all of whom seemed miserable.

- Very rigid brand — difficult to have fun.

- There’s not much trust or freedom for anyone. Just a cutthroat corporate prison.

- HQ built like a prison: few windows, thick security, & drab colors for miles. Their campus parking garage would experience its own rush hour gridlock with cars at a standstill waiting for the light outside to turn green so they could hop on 285
