How old were you when you started in food service? I started in retail at 17 but switched over to the restaurant biz at 33! I definitely find it more exciting and rewarding. What’s your story?

I started out at 21 when I needed some cash to help pay for college stuff. I honestly thought it was going to be temporary. I've been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years now and I can't picture myself doing anything else. I love it.

Right out of high school, around 18. Took some line cook gigs before working my way up to sous chef. The kitchen chaos is addictive. It's pressure cooker by day, creative playground by night.

Totally love the BOH! It’s such a demanding yet rewarding job!

Mcdonalds when I was 15! Worked there for 2 years and is still the #1 most stressful job I've ever had. Started as a hostess for a great restaurant when I was 18 and ended up with them as a line cook.

Wow never worked at McDonald’s - how is it more stressful than a regular restaurant?

My history? I started in food service at 19, a small café gig while in school. I still remember the rush of a packed Saturday morning. There’s something about the pace and people that just hits differently. I switched careers at 35, and now I manage a food truck I adore. It’s never too late to find your fit.

Do you like the food truck more than a restaurant? It’s kind of the same except I guess you move around so do you ever get regulars?

I started working as a hostess at 18. I did that for two years, then got an opportunity to move up to server. I've been doing that for 6 years now and still enjoy it, even if the crazy hours are a bit of a drag.

Yeah serving is a sweet job - I always look forward to certain regulars coming in - and it definitely helps when the tips are good!

I started with Sonic Drive In at 14 years old, while still in school, was in work program later and would leave at 11am, and work until 1 pm, go back to school until 330, the back to work at 5pm. Made .90 cents per hour, must have loved it, stayed with the company 27 years.

I started food service recently (I'm 18), and while I enjoy it I love food safety even more! A lot of people have told me "you would be a great heath inspector!"
Challenge accepted, hold my root beer...

Parents are deciding between moving to WVirginia vs Virginia at retirement to be closer to us based in fairfax (ideally be at 1 hour driving distance). They currently in the mid west but WVirginia appeals to them because of low taxes, low cost of living. We are also poc so appreciate some diversity.

What are some areas you would recommend both in Va and WV? What else should they consider prior to house hunting? Dad likes to garden/farm as well so looking for homes with large backyards. Tia!

My company went toxic in the last couple months. Chose me and started interviewing. Had a very successful interview with Amazon but recruiter is working hard trying to place me and said there’s no knowing how long to find a team. Meanwhile I just received a Director offer for a company with a 29% pay bump July 1. If Amazon or any other FAANG/large co gets back to me, is there an acceptable way to not burn bridges with new job and accept or delay start date with FAANG? Or fuck it just hop?

Is my relationship worth it? Met my SO of 3 years senior year of college. Hoped we would graduate and start our full time jobs together, but my SO is unfortunately still in school (switched majors, transferred schools, etc). Our relationship has taken a big hit, as I am moving forward with my life but he is still in school and can’t find a job. I am also starting to resent him and he is turning more insecure. I am only 23, is this worth it?

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
