Virginia will probably be a little nicer, closer to you, and more diverse, but also more expensive. I’m assuming if they went to West Virginia it would be around Martinsburg, which is really the only part of the state that isn’t in the Appalachians.
Would recommend they look into Winchester (Virginia) as well. Which is far enough away to not be expensive and has a nice little town center area.
Fauquier county would be good to look at. Cost of living is good, within 1 hour of Ffx.
If you are POC I would advise against WV. It can be uncomfortable there for POC and I’m speaking from experience.
Look at medical services as they age.. I am also slightly terrified of WV after the report of a women driving her husband to VA because they refused to test for COVId.
Thanks both for adding this perspective. They are in good health but in their 60s and 70s so I would keep access to good healthcare a priority.
West Virginia is beautiful and has some great small towns in the mountains. That being said, the healthcare options in the state are 3rd world at best and real estate does not appreciate like normal markets. All in all, a beautiful state, with very friendly people, stuck in the 1800s.
Agree with others that VA would probably be a better option than WV.
Some nice areas: Fredericksburg, warrenton, chantilly, Charlottesville, the plains, bluemont, centerville, purcellville, upperville, Waterford, Gainesville, Winchester.
I wouldn’t go too rural in VA, as a lot of it is like WV in that it’s very, very backwards out there.
Alternatively, if they’re interested in looking outside of VA/WV Frederick is a really nice smaller town and Damascus is another option in MD
People in this thread thinking the eastern panhandle = WV. It’s a lot more comparable to MD. Remote, sure, but it’s not like Deliverance levels of “backwards”. 🙄
Coming from someone from southern WV.
Thank you, planning on looking at some homes in Martinsburg and surrounding areas this weekend.
For VA, considering Front Royal, Winchester and Culpeper. All 3 areas are an hour drive from where we live in Fairfax.
We just realized we might have to account for tolls as additional expenses if they decide to live in VA.
OP- please let us know where they ultimately decide. I'm on the edge of my seat here!
We shortlisted a few homes in a few areas. I shared some details above
If it has to be WV, then Harper's Ferry, but VA offers more options.
Do they prefer city, suburbs, or small town/village?
Small town ,suburbs, village..can't afford the city
