How has turnover been for the team the last few years? Would I be stepping in as a replacement hire or is the mandate growth driven? For those that left the past few years, what did they cite for the reasons and where did they go after they left?
Typically from those points you can suss out the vibe. Major red flag if they get uncomfortable talking about any of these topics cause it means they have unresolved issues that are causing ppl to leave.
These are great. I am adding them to my list of questions. Thank you for this.
Those are good questions, and I sometimes think it’s good to ask those bluntly! :) However if you did want to be less blunt, you could ask “how has this team grown in the last few years, and what does progression look like?” And also “what does the average day for someone on this team look like?”
Asking about family values is in my opinion a one angle to come from
You could also ask how fast the company is growing and what their plans are to keep up with this growth. No plans means no work life balance. If In process of implementing the plan - you might get work life balance. If they don’t need the plan because they are ahead of growth - you’ll have work life balance. Idk. This is just a theory.
I just got a new job and made it a point to be forward about what I wanted. I was honest about what I wanted bc at the end of the day I didn’t need the job. I had the upper hand. I interviewed with 2 PE firms and Healthcare Company. Healthcare is who I went with. PE would have gave me the WLB bc they were “Business Intelligence” roles so pretty easy compared to being an acquisition associate.
