Great article not necessarily in depth but just the fact that someone is bringing up these points. #3 is especially true. And add to that (at least in my case) whatever nights I'm home, if one of the two kids gets up, I deal with it. Even in the summer, which wife has off. I am fortunate with my career and family, but definitely agree that expectations for working dads are higher than ever and vastly overshadowed by the working mom sob stories. Fact is, in an intact family, the women have way more career flexibility.
Yep. I'm a new dad and just getting back to work after paternity leave. I already know how's it's going to play out during the weeks I'm traveling: I'll feel guilty about have been gone 3 nights during the week so will go above and beyond to make up for it the 4 nights that I am home...all while managing the full-time workload of whatever project I'm on. Going to be tough.
I'd add 6: When people ask me what I do for fun not involving my kids I just stare blankly at them because I honestly can't think of anything.
Agreed BCG1! I used to go drinking once upon a time, now fun is brunch with the whole family 🙂
Well that just makes you a good dude. Being present is the hard part for me, separating my work from every second I can spend with my kids. Even if I have to sign on later that night, not letting thoughts distract me from giving my kids my all.
I've been able to enjoy more of my weekends after hiring a housecleaning service. I have them come every other Friday and it takes a load of pressure off to keep the tubs, sinks, floors, etc clean.
@BCG1 The same people in the office ask me every damn Friday if I have any fun plans for the weekend. Super annoying. The answer always is a version of "kids stuff and chores".
