I accepted an offer to go in-house at the start of next year so I can keep my EOY bonus. To people who have been in this position, how did you stay motivated the last couple months of biglaw? My brain has mentally checked out of the firm since signing the offer letter, but the work has not slowed (also, the firm guarantees year end bonuses regardless of hours, so no push on that front). I’m not trying to torch my reputation on the way out but I truly cannot be bothered to bill these hours.

Law is a small field at the end of the day. It’s worth it to be remembered well by attorneys and partners. Never know when those relationships will come back around.

why did you give any notice, just leave now

dw about it, do the least work possible

I assume you haven’t given notice? Just do the bare minimum until January, don’t give it 100%.

Very tempting, though the one thing keeping me going is not wanting to screw over team members. I’m definitely dialing it in to a degree, but with our central staffing system if I do too much that might get me staffed to even more.

You definitely want to stay on good terms with your current team, but can you schedule a week long vacation? Or maybe take a few fridays off? I’m hoping to be in your position here soon and that’s my plan. Keep doing the work but take some days off and try not to work a ton outside of business hours.

I am in the exact same boat. I just accepted an in house offer, but waiting to give my notice until the last Friday of December when my bonus gets paid. It's brutal knowing that i'm leaving but pretending to still GAF. Congrats on the new job!

You too! Here’s to no more billables

Thoughts on buying pre-construction homes in markets that are popping and flipping selling them when construction is complete?

My uncle does this (he’s a realtor) and usually gets 2-3x return. Obviously there is huge risk because property prices can change a lot in 1-2 years, but at the same time the upside is hard to ignore.

Anyway I protect myself against the downside risk? (other than loosing my down payment)

Anyone subletting this summer?

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

I have been at my company for 3.5 years. One year ago (2.5 years into my employment with them) they re-leveled everyone and I was bumped to an entry level position on the terms that they changed my job title when they re-leveled, so “technically” I am at the early stages of my new title. Even though the job duties did not really change.
I’m not sure the best way to approach this. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know how I should advocate for myself?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

How do you find in-house positions?

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

I have been stiff arming Vanguard for years but am curious if there’s any actual benefit. Or at least funny stories.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
