Sorry to hear what you are going through! Major bait-and-switch no doubt. Consider casting a wider net on where you apply if you are looking to make a move ASAP. Remote work has really opened up the possibilities with companies that were smaller and only used to do local/regional hires before. Perhaps pick a city/state that you wouldn’t mind visiting a couple times a year for team meetings, search Glassdoor/Best Places To Work lists to find awesome companies, and get that resume out there. Or pick an Industry and do the same. Just a numbers game at this point, and the market is HOT for Product folks. Good luck!
It feels like I was getting interview requests weekly December-Feb and it has died down.
That's a lack of solid SOP's and good management practices for sure.
This is true of all companies more or less these days unfortunately - big or small. The world has changed and playing fast and loose with people has become the norm. It’s as if - if you are remote and not a real person they have met, they don’t really think of you as a person.
I have changed jobs thrice during the pandemic to find that sweet spot as you describe OP, I was approached and pursued by the recruiters in all cases - they really woo you and then there is nothing close to what was told and the internal politics and the nature of how work is handled, it’s meaninglessness are mind boggling. It’s as if they are stuffing people in slots without any real thought or planning.
It’s a changed world and mindset.
I agree, this is exactly how I feel about my current role. It’s unfortunate because I really like my manager but the company culture is not a fit at all. I don’t even speak to any of my coworkers because there is a huge age gap and I have 1 particular colleague that speaks down to me as if he’s above all of us and it’s everyday micro aggression from his end. I’ve started actively looking for a remote role. Praying for a change soon.
In addition, they are pushing an aggressive return to office, 4 days that I never agreed to during the interview (I was told 1-2 days max). I have since been given a 5% increase as they are trying to retain employees and “keep us happy” but for me it’s not only about the money. I need to be in a role that’s fulfilling, working on things that interest me with a supportive and talented team around me.
I have been applying for remote roles in SalesForce, Spotify, Disney, Meta but no luck. I got to the final round with Salesforce and it ended up not working out so I took this role back in December. Open to any suggestions I can get. Happy to connect.
I’ve had the conversation with my manager already. Not much came from it
Unfortunately this sort of thing is more common that I would hope. Companies focus on hiring and assume you’ll just put up with whatever that they tell you what you want to hear vs the real. I agree with someone above that said about casting your net wider. But also maybe it’s about casting wide in a specific area. You mention companies in a wide range of industries. Is there a certain area you have experience where you have a unique selling point and then you go for a wide range within that? For example I see Spotify on there. Maybe you have experience with creators and you look into everything from TikTok to Spotify to SoundCloud to YouTube etc. maybe you’re already doing that. Have whatever that thing is you have a strong leg to stand on and go to everywhere that is relevant to that
My background is in M&E. I have applied to Spotify because I am an everyday user and would love to work on an application that I am really interested in. That’s the biggest thing for me, I want to come into work and be passionate and excited about what I am doing. I like to view myself on the flip side as the user and get curious about what things can be enhanced and changed. The PM in me instantly kicks in when I pick up my phone and use applications.
