The only thing you can do is control what you can. Try to do your best at the job, for better or worse, at least you will build the skills. Try to build good relationships with the people you directly work with, having a good relationships with coworkers/direct manager can go a long way. This also builds your network and can get your foot in the door at another company if they leave.
Be loyal to people not organizations
I suppose we all feel that at times. It seems you can't be assured of any job, or any company, being a stable place to work for a long period of time. People used to spend most of their career at one place, and that just can't happen any more, people are just seen as interchangeable parts. I don't know what the solution is beyond being aware of it, and keeping yourself prepared for any eventuality.
Companies are loyal to profits. If you make the company money, don’t need to be worried about getting laid off
unless you performed subpar the previous years then they never forget
This is the root of the problem with the accounting industry
Stop treating this as a “job” and treat it as a “career” and you will see a difference. I am unsure if you work your typical 9-5 or you put in the extra time everyday, regardless of season. That is one prong of many others that higher ups notice. As I heard before in some podcasts, its not about how well you do or what you know, it is about your attitude and how you roll with the punches.
Good luck, these are some items to think about.
For those reading and saying what does hours matter, it does, you want to compare our professions to being successful, then compare successful individuals in other professions, and you will notice they all put in 12-15 hour days, most times.
The key for you is to become invaluable. This requires hard work and dedication. We as managing partners do not ever let great people go. I have the same team around me for the past 20 years and once you are in with a great firm and the partners know your dedication to their clients you are golden. You will never look back in the rear view mirror again.
