I am looking for tips on how to start giving 75% instead of 100% to this job. I've realized that I am a cog in a wheel and am trying to shift my focus to this being just a paycheck. I struggle with not giving my all, but they always ask for more. I'm done giving.
Any legitimate advice or shared experience would be helpful.

I’d focus more on making sure you’re carving out time to take care of yourself first

Schedule time for workouts and block them on your calendar

Take time (even 15-20 minutes!) to eat lunch not sitting in front of a screen

Actually schedule, take, and disconnect during PTO

Make a point to make social plans and block your calendar accordingly (some people take this too far - but a couple social plans a week should be workable)

Try to log off by a certain time every day, and stick to it (of course stuff will come up, but try to stick to this at least 80% of the time)

If you’ve already done that, remember that you’re not saving lives, and that no one at work is looking out for you like you and your family. Everyone is out here doing their best and trying to survive the week/month/season, but if you’re a pushover, you will get walked all over

Last thing - all of this needs to be viewed within the bigger structure of your career goals. If you’re pushing for a promotion to SM, in the big scheme it might be worth pushing beyond your comfort zone for a bit

Thank you for taking the time to respond. These are great tips!

One thing to consider is that the Big4 have a host of benefits beyond salary that the next 10 don’t really offer. Coupled with the connections you’ve built at B4, it’s hard to leave the “known”. Consider whether different position in the firm would help. Sometimes creating boundaries is hard mentally but it’s like anything else that with practice you will find a better balance.

Go ahead with the 75 percent plan. You will be found out within four to six months and the firm will take care of it for you. No one is forcing you to stay and if it’s too tough you should find a career elsewhere

“When is this project expected to kick off? I’m currently at capacity and expect to free up around X.”

I would change firms if you feel this way AND have talked to your partners and came away thinking that nothing will change. I will say it sounds like you are on poorly run engagements if you have to work most weekends and can’t step away for dinner and come back after. That is not normal at the manager level. As a manager, you also play a huge role in making things run smoothly, so perhaps reflect on what you could have done differently to improve things as well. If you truly just want an 8-5 “job,” public accounting is not really the place for that, but note that the chill jobs often come with their own downsides (boredom, lack of opportunity for growth and learning, lower pay after a few years, etc…).

We’re largely completing tax returns in tax. Yes other groups do other things. There is absolutely no reason to be available around the clock or 10-12+ hours a day. Yes, sometimes you need to. But dear god, we’re not saving lives. Leadership needs to work on expectations with clients. If clients want us to be available, they shouldn’t be fighting on fees because “tax isn’t a value-add”.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?
