Went to the gym to pass the time. Took up a lot hobbies to keep myself busy. My suggestion is to find some hobbies.
I worked out a lot and filled my time with as many things as I could get my hands on. I learned a language, worked out and read whatever I could get my hands on. Just don’t stay idle.
Embrace the suck, could be worse.
If you're in a location where you can go off-base, get out and explore,, go on MWR tours/trips. It's possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Also as others mentioned go to the gym, pick-upa hobby. Many moons ago while deployed to Honduras I made a wicker laundry hamper.
You also have modern technology to video chat with those back home. Take advantage of it.
An old coworker of mine was serving overseas and actually said “pen pal-ing” helped him get through it. It gave him something to look forward to. He was writing to people in states he wanted to visit.
I’d be happy to be your pen pal :)
Question though-are you a federal employee or are you over there for military service?
Talk to friends everyday/ almost every day. Stay focused, not just work. Have some routines like working out, school, or even playing cards. There should be a decent amount of down time, so when you’re resting, throw on a movie or tv show that you’re interested in. Work on surrounding yourself with a good, but fun crowd. - Tips from someone on his second deployment
Make sure you are taking care of your self physically as well. I was on a boat working nights but made sure to go out and get sunlight at least once a week
Get out of the barracks and do activities. It's easy to corner yourself, hard to get out, push back my friend.
Gym,gym, gym, if you are in oki and on shuwab go to recon beach on a calm day and swim or stop at the shop by the staff n O barracks and rent a kayak and paddle to the recon rock it’s pretty dope
I did a year tour overseas, the time goes by way faster if you get involved with your battle buddies in the barracks. Don’t count the days until you leave, don’t be a barracks rat. I made some of the best friends I have ever had while deployed that I still talk to even now. Do any unique things you can do in the country you are in and take a lot of photos doing it since you may never be in that country again. Oh, and write down all the names of your friends you make with all the photos you take. Trust me years later no matter how tight you are their names get harder to remember.
I started mountain biking, scuba diving, and going on as many MWR trips that I could afford and get pto for.
Get a Skype account. It let's you talk and video chat with people back home. I did a long stint overseas when my kids were young. I bought two copies of a bunch of kids books. I mailed one copy to me and one to my kids. My daughter used to wait for my call and pick a book from the box. I would read that story to her over Skype. Best dad idea ever.
