Are you the originating attorney/responsible for billing decisions for the smaller clients? If not, you shouldn’t avoid recording your time. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to write down time in consideration of the client’s ability to pay and other factors. But it’s the responsibility of the partner/originating attorney to make that decision, and you shouldn’t be personally penalized for someone else’s decision to take clients that can’t afford to pay for all your time.
Came here to say this but it’s already been said. Commenting for emphasis!! This is the answer.
I think one thing to remember is it is not your job to save the client money on legal fees. The price is the price, and they agreed to that. They can complain about the bill if it’s too high or hire different counsel, but they don’t even know how high it could be with missing time.
