I am so frustrated with my practice and some of the files I have. My firm represents everyone from mom and pop shops to billion dollar companies but we have the same rate for all of them. About a 1/4 to 1/3 of my billable time is on these smaller files. It's incredibly difficult to be cost efficient and effective to smaller clients at the same rates we charge to the massive companies. I keep not recording my time because I feel so bad so some of these clients and am burning out as a result.

Are you the originating attorney/responsible for billing decisions for the smaller clients? If not, you shouldn’t avoid recording your time. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to write down time in consideration of the client’s ability to pay and other factors. But it’s the responsibility of the partner/originating attorney to make that decision, and you shouldn’t be personally penalized for someone else’s decision to take clients that can’t afford to pay for all your time.

Came here to say this but it’s already been said. Commenting for emphasis!! This is the answer.

I think one thing to remember is it is not your job to save the client money on legal fees. The price is the price, and they agreed to that. They can complain about the bill if it’s too high or hire different counsel, but they don’t even know how high it could be with missing time.

Do tech companies like FAANG hire strategy consultants? Starting at an MBB/T2 next year and curious if tech companies leverage consultants as much as other industries. Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. This morning, a name partners assistant didn't realize the name partner had a depo and didn't confirm it. This is how this firm as been for decades and it's incredibly frustrating to work this way. It's so hard to not stress over this daily.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
