I am the only person on my team who doesn't have kids, and I am officially tired of being the permanent weekend and holiday coverage. My coworkers openly discuss how hard it is to find childcare, while I’m expected to pick up the slack because my time is apparently less valuable. I have a life, a dog, and a family too, even if I didn't give birth to them. How do I set a boundary with my scheduler without sounding like I hate children?

“No” is a full sentence. You don’t have to justify your free time. This is management’s responsibility to hire enough people to cover the shifts, not yours.

Start putting in for vacation days around the holidays at least 6 months in advance if you are able to. You do not have to state why you are wanting the time off. It will also send a message to the scheduler that you see your time as valuable too and to be more productive, you also need time away.

like

You will simply need to be vocal and let them know you can't cover. Nothing wrong with saying no. Practicing beforehand can help too. You got this

“I’m not able to do that right now.”
“I’ll have to pass on this.”
“That won’t work for me.”
“I appreciate you asking, but I can’t commit to that.”
💛 Kind & Gentle
“I wish I could, but I can’t.”
“Maybe another time.”
“I’m not in a place to say yes right now.”
“I’d love to help, just not today.”
💪 Firm but Respectful
“I’m going to decline.”
“That’s not something I can take on.”
“I need to focus on other priorities right now.”
“I’m not available for that.”

Simply state that you too have family commitments and responsibilities that prevent you from being available on X days, or specific dates/times. This will force mgmt to source back-up coverage elsewhere.
