"Flexible" always means flexible for them, not for you. That's just the way it goes. The good jobs are out there, but they're few and far between.

It wouldn't be bad if it went both ways bit of give and take from both ends but it's always one sided...

Honestly, there are few jobs that will grant day off requests as a new employee. Someone with seniority may have that luxury, but overall, scheduling is based on business needs and they couldn’t care less to give you a semblance of a normal schedule

I think about this a lot. My job wants me to be available 24/7 but pays me 16 hours a week. When I told my boss I was going to have to get a second job because I can't afford to live on this income, he told me it would probably result in a reduction of hours. How is that even possible, to get even FEWER hours?

Not even a job hardly at 16 hours let alone any less... But they expect you to be free all the time? Ridiculous
