Something that helped me in the beginning was doing some freelance work. Some things weren't glamorous, but it helped me have a lot more independence.
Yeah, I have picked up bits of freelance too. Not glamorous at all, but at least it gives me some breathing room and a bit of independence while the main job barely pays.
There is a good reason why the working classes struggle and newsrooms are filled with the wealthy and the nepo. I have had to do all sorts of random side jobs alongside my work to pay my bills.
Sad but true
One of the unfortunate truths is that media organizations and publishing houses have traditionally paid poorly and it was a form of gatekeeping. Only people with family money could afford to take the internships or take jobs at such organizations. So that was often a way to make sure only people from certain classes would be represented. That has changed a lot in recent decades, but there's still too much of that going on. Anyway, that's one way people survive, they show up with money. The rest of us figure it out as best we can.
You nailed it. It really does feel like gatekeeping—like only people with family money can afford to grind at the bottom. The rest of us are just trying not to drown.
I was fortunate to live and work in a pretty cheap place. I’m not sure I could even make it now if just starting. It’s hard across the board in a lot of industries.
If I was starting out now, I honestly do not think I could make it. Costs are brutal everywhere, and pay in this industry has not caught up one bit
When I first started I was working 12 hour days (and nights) and commuting well over an hour because I had to live far outside of a city to afford anything! Starting out is hard but once you move up it gets better!
