Honestly, those moments are brutal — you feel like you’ve poured hours into nothing. What helps me is reframing it: debunking misinformation is part of the job, even if it feels invisible. I also set small wins so the dead ends sting less.
Yeah, I need to start treating those dead ends as part of the job instead of failures. Reframing it as debunking makes it feel less like wasted time and more like unseen work that still matters.
It's a good thing you didn't run with it without looking into it first. Maybe that's the story. We need more help debunking misinformation.
You deserve credit for making an effort to verify whatever it was. The press being taken in by hoaxes (or not) has a long history, but in today's world it's just a broken fire hydrant of this nonsense. I mean, it's amusing to see the videos of gigantic dogs or sharks on someone's lawn, but we don't need it on the news.
True, better to waste days chasing it than be the outlet that runs with a fake. Still frustrating, but I guess that’s the price of keeping standards high.
I agree with a person who said there is a story in this experience to be told. Navigating misinformation is becoming more and more difficult even for those of us whose job it is to navigate these things.
Good point. Maybe the real story is how messy verification has become. People see the headline but never the hours of digging just to prove something is fake.
Well done that you still care enough to chase leads and fact check. You should be proud in the world of quick turnaround slop, you still care about the integrity of your craft.
