I continue to be amazed at how job adverts ask for experience in specific platforms, languages or proprietary products. A professional should be agnostic about these nuances. The ability to create reliable, maintainable and bug-free products is transferable and anyone should be capable of using that ability in new domains in a relatively short space of time.
I am also amazed that veterans are discarded through ageism. I am 77 years old with 50+ years experience and can still produce good work.

Theoretically, you might have fewer days of normal productivity than a younger person.
Blood pressure, secondary illnesses, immunity, etc.
To do your job, you need better conditions, a well-ventilated room, more oxygen, roughly speaking. Young people have better vascular capacity and higher hemoglobin levels.
Insurance will cost you more.
Theoretically.
Communicating with colleagues on unrelated topics is a problem.
People like to talk, chat, and converse, not just work.
You have different interests, reflections, and associations. A simple example: in chats, colleagues often exchange pictures and movie clips to convey their emotions. I can do this too, but my associations are different. My colleagues haven't seen the films that evoke associations for me.
I believe that a programming language really is a "language."
Roughly speaking, you're saying the following: I express my thoughts perfectly in English and create emotional and logical constructs in it. Therefore, I can quickly learn to use any other language.

Agree on the ageism and it's such an artificia concept. We are all growing older and learning. Older people have less likelihood changing jobs, typically more loyal and also contribute largely in non directly visible places such as acting as mentors for others or guiding.

Unfair wrap and label where older gents and ladies may be seen as non trainable so the whole display growth mindset and adaptability is so key to people with long track records.

Pair them with someone younger and you can get a lot of value 🤗

Keep showing up and finding a place for yourself in the industry! I’m just more in awe that you feel like keeping up with the joneses. I’m only 10 years in the industry and I feel like it may not be forever

Unfortunately, ageism is a major issue in this field. I’m 45 and I’m already experiencing it. No clue how we can combat these stereotypes. All of these younger people are willing to do our jobs for a lot less money.

A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I mean big big company is like 10x bigger than the small one if this was a factor. Assume everything else the same, WLB, commute, teams, etc.

Anyone have experience working CWX side of Facebook (Meta) ? These are the full time contract roles that potentially turn into permanent roles directly with Facebook (Meta). Is it normal for Amazon recruiters to reach out to you regarding SWE positions? I’ve received a couple messages on LinkedIn about some openings, but considering the fact that I’m still a junior developer I’m not sure if they’re legit or scams.

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?
