I don’t mean to be a millennial associate and complain about phone calls, but I will for a second. We’re not afraid of them and don’t need to reduce everything to anxiety or something, but impromptu cold calls can be so disruptive to working. Sometimes I’ll have a call list of 6 people long for non urgent things. I feel like even a “can you do a quick call” email would be revolutionarily beneficial.

What’s frustrating is when someone calls without warning to negotiate something that they’ve thought through and you haven’t in order to try to catch you off guard, but it happens.

Other calls are often faster than an email, something complicated that needs to be explained, or something people don’t want to put in writing. A quick heads up to schedule a call that could be lengthy is respectful, but otherwise is often so much more efficient to just pick up the phone and talk for 5 mins. Esp with remote work when you can’t stop by someone’s office.

like

I’m late gen x and don’t like unsolicited phone calls either. I much prefer can we talk at x time? But colleagues and clients will often just call you. Though I’m more used to a text or email trying to set up a call. If it’s a colleague and you’re in the office, it’s harder to dodge. But with a client an I’m on another call can I call you back at x time should suffice.

like

This is dramatic. When I was a tax controversy lawyer for a consulting firm I got a Teams call every 15 minutes. You’ve just gotta learn to roll with it

like

Yeah, that sounds really disruptive and not a good way of doing business!

like

Not everything is convenient and it’s not supposed to be. If an OP calls you at a time that is inconvenient or you are unprepared, that’s no accident. You are supposed to do the same thing to them. You can demand that s/he only communicate in writing, but that’s impractical, inefficient and, for certain kinds of work, may get you fired.

Your client has hired you to win, not to be as fair and balanced as possible. That said, you must never do (or counsel) anything illegal or unethical. However, generally speaking, any transaction or dispute involves only two parties and second place is the first loser.

One of the other posters said “roll with the punches“. That’s not just great advice; that IS the profession.

Make sure you pay attention to your symptoms and not lose track of who you are and where you need to be mentally, physically, and emotionally.
