I feel a bit lost and could really use some guidance/mentorship. I have been in my industry for over 6 years yet, I can’t seem to be considered for the opportunity I want at my company. I perform very well and I have talent but my application is not even being opened or looked at, no matter how much I ask. I can’t help but feel I’m being singled out. I feel like I’m being dismissed without even being given a fair chance. I don’t want to play the gender card willy nilly, but Idk what to think.

Agree!!! And always be looking, my resume STAYS on LinkedIn and indeed. I always keep those sites sending me job recommendations. You will find where you’re meant to be.

Ask your manager very directly what you need to do to get that role. If they won’t help you get it, look for a job elsewhere.

like

Be direct with your manager. Have open and honest communication. I just applied for a management role at my company and was turned down because they said I didn’t have demonstrated managerial experience. Which was really annoying but I asked for opportunities to start managing anyway and they promoted me to a different non manager role with the plan to get that experience.

I’ve been listening to a book called “nice girls don’t get the corner office” and it has a lot of great advice on how to shift your mindset to get what you want.

You might be too good at what you’re doing now and they’ve decided to keep you there. You may be pigeonholed.

This.

Look elsewhere. Companies don’t honor loyalty.

Need more info, but typically there is a formal process then there is the informal/unwritten process. Take a moment and gather info (by asking trusted folks, including your manager if relevant) how internal promos or rotation decisions are made. An application may be just a formality, with the real decisions being made through a series of interactions or conversations in rooms you may not be in yet (so +1 on the person who mentioned identifying a sponsor)

Straight up ask what you need to do to get that role. No need to play the gender card. Advocate for yourself, outline all of the ways you’re perfect for the role and then bounce if you aren’t being heard. Know your value.

like

Need more context. Your profile says manager and 6 years in and a manager seems good depending on the details but also might not be enough for your next position, depending on details. It’s hard to say without knowing more.

like

Those are some good points. I think two of the biggest contributors to getting to the next level are 1) internal networking and 2) doing what you can to already be doing the things required of the job. Demonstrate leadership, initiative, results.

But if those things don’t work, sometimes you gotta go. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I saw someone else do this, so imma give it a shot. Lately, I’ve been applying to iOS developer roles and I’m getting TONs of calls and callbacks from HR and recruiting managers, but then when my resume gets pushed to hiring managers they seem to often get peeved at how little years of experience I have with the title “iOS developer”…
which is fair, and to show my credibility I published my first app last week, but I’m still getting similar messages from recruiters this week. Idk what to do??

Happy to provide my story on the other side. Spent two years at Accenture under Technology mostly working on business analysis for implementations and PMO.

Left for Facebook for a role in strategic analytics in BizOps with 180k TC.

Few tips for looking at exits:

1) Referrals are a huge tool for getting your foot in the door. At Facebook it guarantees that atleast your resume is given more than a glance.

2) A well constructed story/resume can offset any weak points in your experience

Are they trying to take my one more round of interview? I was hoping to get offer after sending documents.
