I feel like my resume gets filtered out whenever there’s a ‘CS degree preferred’ line. I’m a self‑taught front‑end developer with a non‑CS degree and about three years of experience at a startup. From your seat, what actually helps nontraditional devs break through that initial screening bias?

This is so frustrating and real. You're doing the work, delivering value, and still bumping into a checkbox. I've seen candidates successfully lead with the impact they’ve had—metrics, shipped projects, user growth, etc.—right at the top of the resume to grab attention before filters can kick in. Also, don’t underestimate referrals or direct outreach to hiring managers to sidestep gatekeeping.

Yeah, unfortunately our HR is very strict on hiring CS people if they are coming from tech recruiters or externally without referrals. The other option is from a trusted Boot camp if you don't have a CS degree.

The problem right now is there are too many candidates for one job.

I should clarify,CS, IS, MIS, EE, or CIS also account. Its when its non-STEM degrees or no degrees, HR will ask if its a referral or from a trusted boot camp.

I have a friend who was let go a few months into his first job after college (reason: the manager felt like he wasn't grasping the training content to the level that was expected). He's worried about if he should put the experience on his resume anyway, if he does will recruiters ask why he had such a short time at this place, and what will recruiters think if he explains he was let go. What are some things recruiters expect from candidates in this situation to continue considering them?
