AI marks the official end of free work. If an agency can process your thinking on an AI model, that’s an immediate 50k they owe you.
Where are you? American Minds will say hell no but that’s pretty common in the real world, even if this one is a bit extreme.
europe. its the 5-10hr prep assignment that has me scratching my head, for someone already working fulltime and juggling other "test" assignments, this seems like an exceptionally big ask for one job application
I’d appreciate the transparency up front, 21 days and 4 calls is kinda average these days. I won’t do a test brief though. That’s what my book is for.
the test brief is the part that gets me. interviews and timing is fine but test assignments are already becoming a massively time-consuming task when applying for multiple jobs. 5-10hours for a senior role seems like going too far for a single application
Send them back a single slide citing the 5 to 10 hr test brief and your hourly rate
Honestly this doesn't sound too terrible...and I'm in the US. 4 interviews seems reasonable, doesn't it? I prefer to have that many conversations so I can get a deeper view into the company. And a single 5 hour assignment is potentially on the high side, but you can also put into it only as much as you want. If I were to do any assignment I'd probably spend that time on it anyway.
I do not like the idea of doing any assignments for free, but I get that it's the price of entry some places and this really doesn't seem extreme. Sounds like I'm in the minority on this one though 🤷🏻♂️
maybe for a VP role but this is a standard senior writing position. it's basically still a copywriter, just trusted more to submit work without as much oversight and occasionally manage small teams
Ask for a freelance few for assignment and if they won’t pay respectfully pass - your book should be enough to demonstrate your style
If it's a senior role and a newer agency, I'd imagine they just want to get the ball rolling very quickly with people who know what they're doing. If this is an entry level position however, they're nuts.
That aside, it definitely seems a bit excessive, but I can't fault them for at least advising you on their process ahead of time.
Honestly so many people represent work in their book that is way beyond the quality they bring on an average day. If you’re good at what you do you won’t be daunted by this at all. They know that.
