I feel like the most important skill in consulting isn't analysis or problem-solving...it's knowing how to spin a story to make the client happy. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I getting cynical?

I hear this a lot but I think you could extend it to most products and services.

The most important skill in producing widgets is not widget crafting it’s delivering a product that makes your customer happy to purchase them.

Seems pedantic, but if you sell lots of widgets that make your customer happy with their purchase and they are bad widgets then you will stop getting business.

Same with consulting. If your firm delivers bad advice companies will not hire you again, and other companies will catch on. Lots of firms have repeat customers year after year. Exec positions at f500s are full of consulting alums. I’m sure if consulting was just a bunch of fluff that they’d love to save the money and take the work in house.

That being said, communication is probably more important for a consultant in day to day activities than it is for someone developing a product or building a house etc.

And one more thing. “Consulting” has evolved a lot since the business strategy popped up like 50 years ago. Right now it’s moving towards more technology strategy and less corporate strategy. It will be harder to bs a cloud migration strategy or ai integration than a board reorganization or workplace transformation.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

My marriage is beyond repair I think. Husband just said we keep having the same conversations over and over in the past year about things we’ve been trying to fix. Is a year enough time? 11 years together for reference. And I don’t think his statement is true - he literally mentioned one of those things last week that he was happy about. I just can’t do it with these vague statements in arguments.
