I’d say it’s a 3 or a 4. The messaging is important, but if no one is paying any attention to it, it’s a miss. If the messaging is lost in the clutter or in bad design, it’s also a miss. At the same time, the best design can’t hide terrible messaging, which is why I would give design a full 5. It’s a symbiotic relationship for sure.
Depends on the product, but usually design is almost as important if not as important as messaging. When 100 products do the same thing, what will your eye go to?
I think design is pretty important but can empathize when heads of brand can hold things up for their reviews. I hate how subjective it can be and even in the face of cold hard data designers will push back. I think about the Tropicana OJ carton redesign fiasco years ago when it was mistaken for private label OJ and sales dropped like 20% overnight. But that’s why I believe in the power of testing to gut check before going to market.
