I had an interview for a position that's about a 30 min commute each way without traffic. Is it okay to ask for the option to work from home 3 days a week instead of 2 (which was their allowance) as part of the negotiation process? This is absolutely work that can be done from home.

It’s important to get what you want from the start. For many an extra day in office could be a deal breaker, for others it’s not a big deal. I would just say you would like to work remotely 3x per week. A lot of companies are forcing in office when some individuals were just coming in 1x, all of a sudden they have to go in 3 or 4 days. I’ve spoken to friends at various firms so do what is best for you!

My commute is 2-3h each way, 3-4x/week. You are considered lucky my friend.

You can ask. But it's also not that bad of a commute for 30 minutes one way

likehelpful

I would be up front with questions but not demanding. Asking about their policy on remote work before your specific circumstance will give you an idea about whether to proceed further with your request.

I’d ask regardless to see but wouldn’t mention the commute time because that’s not a long commute

like

30 minute commute is nothing!

likefunny

I don't understand all the comments stating 30 minutes isn't long. That is long for some people, including me. Not everyone wants to waste 1- 1.5 hours commuting back and forth every day. It never hurts to negotiate, especially in the beginning, vs. waiting a year like someone else mentioned.

like

@Citi1 It's not all about how long of a commute it is. Unfortunately, inflation has affected my family and our budget. Adding a commute now vs a fully remote position where I was, will make a difference, unfortunately. Everyone's situation is different. I was simply wondering if others feel asking about WFH was an acceptable as part of the negotiation process. Realistically instead of asking to WFH more, I should be negotiating a higher salary.

like

Thanks for the responses! I'm coming from a fully remote position and before that, about 30 min commute with traffic in a previous job. So with traffic, it'll be longer than 30 min. I'd rather save some gas and time if they'd allow it, is all.

like

Totally get that. Just remember you could easily be talking to someone that has a 50 minute commute so it could rub them the wrong way. Simply asking for an extra day home is fine in general

like

30 minute commute is nothing. Going to work and meeting other employees is a good way to get to know the company and staff. Maybe after a year you could ask for one day working from home.

Are you a green card holder or American citizen? If so, you should not even hesitate to ask.

Definitely ask and don’t mentioned your commute time.

like

I would honestly pull the offer if you told me a 30 min commute was too long for you- shows 0 commitment. Next you’ll say you can’t work because you ate a huge lunch or some bs. Explore another way to say this would be my rec.

like

“I WORK HARDER CUZ I SIT IN TRAFFIC LONGER!” Awful take.

I commute two hours each way (total 4 hours a day) and was laughed at when I asked to have more wfh days. Lol

like

Id totally ask for it even if 30 min is not that much. If tou don’t ask you’ll never get it plus being in the office 2x a week is more than enough to network and engage with the team.

like

that’s mad crazy if you man. you hate my life the amount i drive

A 30 minute commute? Good luck. It doesn’t hurt to ask

like

Most people here have jobs that are totally doable from home. Yet the company makes them go to the office, and "it is what it is."
Bottom line... if your position was posted as remote the company would have 10x more applicants, longer process, and who knows if you would even get an interview.
If driving 30 minutes is such a bid deal, skip it and apply for remote ones, then let us know if the statement above is true or not.

like

I think that it's fine to inquire about it and not unreasonable at all. An interview is a two-way street. Additionally, there may be a policy in place for just two days a week for all staff but it does not hurt to ask! I am in my fifties and have worked a variety of places. Be courageous.

Thank you for your guidance!

I think it depends on what, if anything, the posting said about the position. I have turned down candidates outright for asking if the position stated that it was full-time in office. I would also make clear that it is not a sticking point for whether or not you would accept the position if offered.

The posting didn't say and a recruiter reached out to me about this position and told me 2x a week in office. I was only casually looking at jobs and set my profile as such on Linkedin.

A lot of companies are asking people to come back to the office so they can work better as a team. If it is an established allowance for 2 days I would stick to that and then if you can pick a day. I would pick a Friday or a Monday then as you establish trust you can negotiate.

I wouldn't ask A lot of companies have a hybrid schedule of 3days in office. If the company is interviewing many candidates they may pass on you and find someone that meets here in office requirements

This place is more focused on strict policies and not actually trying to work their employees and being flexible.
