Kind souls who successfully exited to Google,
Would you be kind enough to refer me to a role at Google!
Came across a role that's a good fit. Would ideally like to target it through a referral and not by applying through the career site.
Would also love to maybe take you for a meal or alike to thank you for it :) Google

If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.

Honestly, maybe it's just me, but I recognized early in my career I did have to give up my life for good work. It's incredibly hard to craft an idea that hasn't been done, is exciting, AND moves the needle for a client. And then, even if you finally think you have all three, you have to sell it to people who are scared of new things (despite wanting it) AND constantly go to battle to protect its integrity. So I decided it wasn't worth that time. I'd rather focus on doing the best I can within the limits of a 40-45 hour work week. I'm proud of what I accomplish in that time, but I'm not proud of most of the work on its own merits. But I'm happy and have time to pursue other projects I do have unending passion for, that nobody can fuck up.
The CD who asks if you're willing to give it your life? He's made a different choice, and at least he's warning you. It should excite the right candidate for that role, and turn off the wrong ones. Because if I'm killing myself to make the best ads possible, I'd want the full team on the same page.
Thanks for sharing, @acd4. Its not just you, that seems to be the general sentiment and when I started I felt that way too. I then had a time in my life where I lost too many loved ones in accidents or diseases that were discovered too late. It was a lot and it also put my life into perspective early on. Ive managed to get good work approved and awards, while never saying "no" to my niece when she wants to go out for ice cream during a weekday or something. Some people think its worth "a sacrifice" to make it, but im not one of those. Maybe thats just how I learned to do it.
How much of your blood, sweat, and tears are you willing to sacrifice for Cheetos?
Gross question from a questionable human being
Gross. What agency?
Yeah warn the people
My answer: “I’m not here to give things up, I’m here to get things - like experience, awards, community.
Good one. I got weirdly personal.
It’s less where we are now, and more where we have been. Times is changing and that CD needs to change along with ‘em.
I understand that there can be endless days during production, pitches etc, but I cant get over the fact I was expected to at least verbally agree to give up personal time on the regular just to work at this company. Like, "oh my family member died, but no worries. Ill stay in the office through their funeral". Idk.
At least you didn’t have to start working there only to find out way too late that you ended up in a sweatshop. This person saved you 6 months and a new job hunt.
Get out.
Does their work warrant the comment? If not, they’re not worth it.
A little, but not enough to make me consider.
Did he hand you a blade while he asked it?
Anddddd welcome to the world of Wieden & Kennedy where everyone is expected to be demoted and take a pay cut for clout.
Answer: “My weekends, a couple toes, and my first born."
Luxury. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o’clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us on the head and neck with a broken bottle — and that’s if we were lucky!
What a horrible question
What was your answer
I got weirdly personal haha. I explained a little on replies here, but basically said that because I went through a tough time that was time consuming, I learned how I work best and to be highly effective without the "sacrifice" unlesd it is needed like I said in pitches/production. Life and people you love are always the main priority. Doubt ill ever hear back haha
There’s massive perspective depending on your level of expertise. If you just started, stop being a baby. If you’re 15 yrs in..... hell no, leave now.
I'm not saying it isn't possible to make amazing work by putting in less time - and I don't think I've ever done an 80 hour week (max was 72 maybe twice) but I think that it's likely and normal and not ridiculous if you're working just over 40hr weeks in the very beginning of your career. This is not unique to advertising by any means.
