I had to take a $20k pay cut since I had to move due to spouse accepting her dream job. I was making $100k at a pulp mill after only 2.5 years out of college. I was shocked to see engineering jobs in the area were only paying $60-80k max for my experience. A manufacturing plant hired me and said I had good experience, but under 3 years was entry level to them. They said I’d likely get promoted in a few months. It’s been 9months and nothing. What should I do? I’ve been told I’m excelling…

Speak to your manager, don’t make any ultimatums or anything, but highlight your good work, and say you are hoping for a promotion.
Look around for other options. It seems like you’re a good worker, who will have options.

And, well done on moving for your spouse.
Keep doing good work, building relationships, asking for more responsibility. good things will happen for you

In all honesty, you’re in a position right now where you have to think about people other than yourself. As long as your spouse’s dream job is worth more than the $20k pay cut you took, the two of you are still better off now than you were before you moved. You might have to just make the best of this situation and work with what you have. Are there other ways you could improve your situation besides a pay raise? More vacation time, a less stressful job, a better company culture or working environment? You might have to look for a job that offers one of those, instead of focusing so much on pay.

I'm sorry, but if I was racking in 100k+ there's no way I'm letting that go, especially for some one else's "dream job"
I have to wonder, would that person truly do the same?

Long story short, I asked my boss about it and he said I’m performing very well but I couldn’t be promoted because it had been less than a year. The year mark was 2 months away, but they only do promotions mid year and end of year. So I ended up taking a job that pays $15k more than the underpaying employer and has a very generous bonus structure. And the position still has $40k of headroom for raises down the road. Glad I pulled the trigger and got out of there.
