Small agency owner 🙋🏻‍♂️ I’ve wracked my brain and have 3 biz model options, none great:

Billable hrs: Generally accepted. We all know the downsides.

Pay4performance: Big upside potential, tons of risks.

Project pricing: Cloak for billable hours. You have to estimate project cost with something.

Who’s thought of a better approach??? Genuinely curious if there is one.

Is it unethical to use an agency proprietary tool (or an industry standard tool that you have access to through your agency) for an interview assignment for a new job?

Is it What they Know? or Who they Know? with a Masters and with Honors my district has never even considered my Principalship even though I completed all the requirements. I finished engineering at uni (last year) and now work in engineering consulting, a lot of systems planning, feasibility studies, safety some high-lvl design. The thing is... It all feels like a pile of bs to me! Business playground where we chat obvious stuff that could be done by the first guy you ask from the campus. Is it just me? Any comments thoughts on that?

I don’t have 100% certainty that at the end of this contract (Spring 2023) that my company will be able to source another contract for me. Just want to keep my options open. I need to know: when seniors tell you to learn excel formulas, read project materials, or basically anything productive during your 'free time' in between tasks, do you actually do it? I only managed to do it a couple of times, but afterwards I become a bit tired of doing this. So instead of learning, I rather rest. And not saying that I won't learn or anything, it's just that I feel that I learn better by doing.

Seen some Slalom people on here, what do you think of working at Slalom as a younger consultant? The company is designed to have many more experienced hires so I would imagine it creates a little bit of a different dynamic than your standard consulting firm? Thoughts?

I have been in the mental health field since 18 and I am desperately trying to get out. I have just over a year of experience in corporate operations and working with stakeholders. What's a "normal" total comp for a new grad software engineer in Bay Area? Is it just me or does consulting pay way less for software engineers than tech companies...
