I have a parallel experience to yours, I started out as a UI designer then transitioned into UX by being vocal and volunteering for research tasks, roadmapping, and data synthesis. You don’t have to step down in a role to learn UX, you could “bootstrap” it. Learn and apply UX as you work through your UI projects starting with the “why.” From there, you can suggest research activities that can address missing gaps with the project scope and reasoning…and, eventually, you will be learning UX. It’s rocky at first but challenges makes better teachers…
I had worked in an agency before as a UI/UX designer with an additional UX designer and it was perfect. It was only a short project though and the agency was small and paid chips.
I’d also worked in-house for fresh tech startups that had a huge budget, but low UX maturity, so my knowledge was enough and money was great. I just felt that as a sole designer I can’t learn from anyone to develop my skills.
Never worked for a staffing agency or a corporation. Should I look into it?
Fresh tech startups with huge budget and low UX maturity? Where at?! They seem to only hire really senior people
Take on extra work in your current role. Look for position on a bigger team where you have more people to learn from. I do think consulting is a place to grow quickly bc you see so many different problem sets and cultures
Also I suck at anything business and strategy and never analysed data other than heat maps
