Starting a new job at Applied Materials on Monday as a Manufacturing Engineer III. I’ve been out of college for 5 years and all of my work experience till now has been in R&D for start ups and small businesses . So not only is this a new experience for me going into such a large company but also a industry (semiconductors). Does anybody has tips or advices on what I should expect as a new hire and how I can set myself up for success? Thanks!

Like you I received a B.S in HS. Initially I felt my degree would limit my career. It was difficult when I first started, but I did a bunch of volunteering and internships to gain experience, which led me to transition to the tech industry as a PM (project management ). If you want to stay in healthcare there are many health-tech companies that are focusing on digital transformation which I believe is great entry point in tech and healthcare. Or just healthcare focus - look at opportunities ( Kaiser, PRA health sciences, Humana, UHG to name a few). You have to explore , I would recommend volunteering and interning to gain experience and figure out where you want to do. Check out if the companies I mentioned have internships available for this summer.
i’ve wanted to transition to tech actually i was thinking of even taking a data analyst course so i’d be more hireable to tech companies. I want to do more internships but i’m an international student so i have to get permission to do so.
That’s great, to know and be able to interpret and analyze data. I’m unfamiliar with the process of approval for international students, so I can’t give any advice on that. But I’m think certain companies will allow so, find more details before applying. Check out international students YouTube channels to see how they handle the process. Best of luck !
