I am a PMP certified PMO, PMP is good to have but not a necessity. Now, if an organisation asks you specifically if you have PMP, then you may say "I am on the path to get the certification". PMP is a theory extensive certification and what matters more is how much of project planning, cost management, resource management have you done in real time. Your interpersonal skill e.g conflict management, Critical thinking, etc will help you more. Hope this gives you a little bit of perspective.
