I have been in the business for longer, and I don’t omit experiences based on dates. I do edit my résumé based on relevance. If I see that an experience in my resume is not relevant to determine place I’m trying to apply, then I’ll omit it. But I am 54 years old and I cannot hide my age anymore.
It's less about wanting to hide my age, at least not past the resume stage. I want to be more on the operations side so I know experience is key but it feels like people with lesser experience get the interviews.
Which I guess you could argue has always been the case. *sighs*
Nope. Got laid off in summer 2023 from my copywriting job. Since then, I’ve submitted 2000+ resumes and have gotten zero full-time offers.
But in creative marketing, having 10+ years of experience screams “I’M OLD” from the mountaintops of one of the most ageist industries in existence.
But full-time creative jobs are going the way of the dodo bird anyway thanks to AI and offshoring. Why pay an SEO writer 100K a year when somebody in India or Nigeria will do it on a freelance basis for $10 a day?
That aside, I’ve been told in countless interviews, “you have a strong portfolio and would be a great fit here,” only to get the “after careful consideration” email 24 hours later. So it’s one of two things:
1 - The hiring manager/team is lying through their teeth about liking my work
Or
2 - They see my face in a video interview and notice I don’t have pink hair or high-waisted baggy jeans, and are instantly repulsed by my gray hair and overall “non-woke” appearance.
It has to be one of those two things. What else could it be?
Either way, I’m about to quit the creative racket because of it.
What does a non-woke person look like?
