Hello, I have an offer from Publicis Sapient for their product management internship program. Wondering if anyone has any insight into the program (exits, etc) and how the return offer looks like in terms of salary. I still also hold an interest in data science so might go with another offer but I’m not sure if it is a wise choice to let go of a PM offer while I have it.

My sister in law was a civil engineer for 8 years and was only making 60k when she left (in Seattle). I was always surprised that she made so little. She actually did a boot camp for coding and now makes six figures after only a few years. She said she wishes she hadn’t done civil engineering in the first place since the pay isn’t worth how much she was working.
Wild !
Civil Eng here. Pay is low in civik engineering, if hes not enjoying and looking for $$ .. encourage him to apply and prep for cases
Rising Star
Yes 100k all in at 32 in NYC is very low.
Age is far less relevant than YOE.
If he’s 32 with 10 YOE, yes that’s low.
If he’s 32 with 2 YOE, that feels on par
10 YOE. he’s been employed as a civil engineer since graduating college.
Furthermore, to work in the civil eng industry you need to get your Professional Engg license. That is an 8 hours exam that is completely exhaustive. F that! I left because the pay was low and the effort wasn't worth it.
Do you mind sharing how you leveraged your civil eng experience into management consulting?
Civil engineering is the lowest paying engineering field in general… as an engineer it should be relatively easy to pivot the experience to just about any industry. Engineers should be good with attention to detail, working against deadlines, working in cross-functional teams and ultimately engineers can’t bs the end product like some of us can in consulting lol I am a former electrical engineer for reference
I used to recruit engineers (construction, civil, some chemical, mechanical, electrical etc). It doesn’t sound crazy low, but I would say 115-130k is more in the range. I don’t know of a ton of engineers who are making “f you” money. That being said, I’ve noticed NYC salaries for jobs in typically higher paying industries like engineering and healthcare tend to be less COL inflated than fields like finance, consulting etc. I will add that if he’s interested in relocating to TX, he could probably get a BIG boost in pay and a lower COL
Good talent in the right field brings value to the company that translate into higher salary. Example programmers in trading firms making 600k+
Id encourage him to move to consulting. Alternatively, Id look into moving to the development side and/or real estate private equity
Pro
Does he has his PE? If he doesn’t, that’s actually pretty high. But then again, if he can’t get his PE after 10 years he needs to figure out something else to do.
My wife is a Civil Engineer in a much lower cost of living and recently “retired.” She has her PE and is a rockstar engineer, but didn’t want to get into management. She made about the same as your brother. If you’re just a billable engineer that’s about all you’re going to get. If you start moving into management then you can do very well. VPs at her old firm are in the $400s.
OP shoot me a message. Just made the switch from civil eng to consulting.
