NYC is the best part of the US. Getting more money and getting to live there instead of DC is win-win.
If you’re not a city person, I could see Savannah being nice, but you’re also assuming a lot of professional risk - limited industries and moving jobs will be a challenge as the trend away from fully remote work continues.

I’ll also say that if you have any desire to experience NYC as a local, you should absolutely do so. Not doing it would be almost on par with the regret from not having served.
I’ve been here for over a decade and will readily say it’s a far better place to live than to visit, even with the trade-offs.
I’ve lived in both for 3+ years and each are awesome. If You’re going to be starting a family go Savannah. If not NYC.
If you are worried about savings the increase to NYC isn’t enough to offset the housing and tax compared to Savannah

I agree with NYC as an interim priority. One of our global partners gave me this advice: start off in a big hub office and build a name for yourself. Once you have that, you can go live anywhere and leverage a much larger network. McKinsey is no different in that regard.
When your kids are little, the value of your dollar will be stretched in NYC for things like quality daycare - but my daughter thrived in Chicago in her early years.
Stay in DC so many people are fleeing NYC because of Leticia James and the Mayor it’s bad news no one is staying there especially big businesses because of what they are doing to Trump Plus it is not safe so many murders and suspects set free. Very bad there
Although NYC is not without its problems, DC has absolutely gone to shit these past couple years. There’s nowhere in NYC I feel unsafe, but I won’t go to Columbia Heights anymore because of all the thugs ruining it for everyone. Grew up in the DMV and now live in NYC.
Is your partner / wife / husband also getting a new job up there?
Sounds like yall will be just fine regardless of the COA you select. Good luck with the next adventure!

Lived in Chicago with kids. Expensive but very doable when they’re very small. It’s the inherent dangers to the city which make it less palatable as they get older — along with the shit schools
I would stay in DC until the right opportunity comes.
