I have an offer from one of my firm’s biggest clients that I’m probably accepting. How do we think folks will react to this?

If my experience is any barometer there will suddenly be partners at the firm who have never talked to you approaching you and treating you like you were one of their closest friends and best associates.

does it matter what role/level? Too funny. I always tell people, dont be a jerk. Some of the people leaving early are likely ending up where the business flows from.

They will hail you as a hero and speak well of you to the client. Then you can send the work elsewhere if you hated them 😝

I may do something similar. Who made the first move - did you apply to the client or did they approach you? What field?

I applied. PE

Who here has moved from Manhattan to one of the newer luxury rentals in LIC? I love the UES, but was just served a 20% rent increase for my studio in a building where our elevator is considered an amenity. Considering branching out. Do you like LIC? Find it has similar conveniences as Manhattan?

I'm currently a property accountant with an MBA in finance. I desire to earn more income considering my credentials and experience. I currently earn 93k and striving to get to 150 or even 200 to be able to live the way I want to live, pay for good schooling for my children, eat organic, travel etc. Even to buy a nice house in a great neighborhood is at lease a million. I'm looking for salary comparisons and recommendations to reach my financial goals

I’m a second year associate and last night I was online until 2:30 AM waiting for one specialists comment to a purchase agreement. I had added all comments during the day from everyone else, and the midlevel and senior were online as well, but it seemed very strange to ask me to stay up just to add three sentences to a purchase agreement. Is this normal?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

Hi boys & girls!

Joined a big firm (Big4) not long a go and starting to feel like I got a good grip on my current work.

I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Can any seasoned lawyer share tips and materials (i.e. books) which can help?

Would it be a good idea to join a Social Club where potential clients spend time? (gym/tennis/paddel/events)

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
