Age discrimination is real - but I feel like 34 is a bit young to feel the full on effects. Maybe look for a place that you like to go to and just talk to the manager to see if they are hiring? Also to be fair, the economy is in the pits …
I too have been in the restaurant business since I was 16 years old. I started out on my birthday hired in as a dishwasher and bus boy at a brand new restaurant opening across the street from my high school. That was a 1988 and I left that company in 2001 as a training general manager. I hate to admit it, but I have also been fired from restaurant management jobs before. To me it’s from unrealistic on attainable goals or you’re not a part of the “good old boy, gang.” I’ve been in your shoes before. It’s taken me six months to find a job at one time. But I did find another job in restaurant management because that’s my passion. Just keep putting those applications out there, you’ve been in the restaurant business so you know when to check on them and when not to check on them. Something good will come your way that will fit your talents and the people that hire you will share your passion for the industry. But don’t take the first job opportunity. Make sure that is where you want to be hired at. Make sure your resume is up-to-date with what I call “sizzle words“ That these computer algorithms pick up and then send those applications to the HR manager for the area director. I use ChatGPT to help me with those “sizzle words“ that an algorithm would pick up. It’s helped me out a lot. I didn’t have the AI write my resume, but I did asset for “ sizzle words “that an algorithm would pick up, so my resume was on the top of the pile. Please update us when you do find a job. Because eventually, you will so keep your head up, keep your thoughts positive in a time where that’s hard to do, but you still have to, and when you go on that interview, just kill it. When I go on an interview, I obviously prepare myself for the interview that while I’m driving to the place I’m gonna be interviewed at I pick a couple songs on my playlist that I play that’s motivational, and I will jam that in the car all the way to the interview so I have positive energy throwing through me through that music so when I go inside on full of positivity. That’s just something I do.
Best of luck to you, my friend you will get this
I'm beginning to feel that that is the situation they'd rather have young and inexperienced...
Try HMSHOST at DFW Airport. They need people badly. The Dallas Cowboys Club in particular.
I went thru the same thing since I moved to Ga…….its not like this in other states.i came from Sarasota ,FL and my world literally got flipped upside down after moving here……I’ve been in hospitality for well over 20 years and applied for over 1,000 positions / jobs and no one would give me the time of day. I finally found a job but that was because of word of mouth. Just keep trying and be persistent!!!!!!! The job market is really wierd here in ATL I’ve noticed that.
