I have been with the same company for 20+ years. More or less the same role though I’ve had a few changes of location and many bosses over that time. I guess my question is, what can I do from here? I’m a loyal and dedicated employee but definitely underutilized. Also, I need to earn more. I’ve got 12 years left before retirement, hopefully, and I’d like to be in a more productive role where the ageism won’t be as much of an issue as I’m worried it will be.

Nowadays, loyalty and dedication doesn’t benefit you, just the company. I hope they’re paying you your worth and not given you the short end of the stick. You deserve only the best!

Thanks. I wish I knew if they were paying me what I’m worth. I just know my pay isn’t cutting it nowadays

I'm in the same boat. Been with my company for over 17 years with 24 years total experience in the assistant role with an additional 20 years to retirement and is no longer valued at my employer. New manager advised me he doesn't need me, responsibilities have changed and have mundane work with my other teams (reception duty, expenses and ordering lunches is my workload). I've reached out to a few resume writers and currently working with one. Trying to find a therapist as I'm suffering from depression and feeling lost as to what I can do. The resume writer advised me that with my background I can move into HR coordination, project coordination/management. (Maybe that is something you can look into.) Only issue is I've always felt I was strictly just an admin. If therapy doesn't work, I'll also look into a career coach. They are a little pricey ($350 for 3 sessions). Also, I'm looking into taking online classes in Project Management but hate that I need to spend money instead of saving as I feel I will be laid off or fired. It's hard trying to figure out where to go from here especially when you submit your resume for a position that is exactly what you have done in the past and a declination email is sent to you stating "you are not what they had in mind for the position." It's so hard and I feel the assistant role is slowly fading away.

like

Agreed. Our new CEO has made it pretty clear he doesn’t value assistants. However my team knows I’m valuable so I’m rather confident I’ll stay put. I recently found out I have adhd which makes things like project management not a viable option for me. I struggle with executive function. The only reason I do well in my job now is that I’ve been doing it for so long that I know what I’m doing. Good luck with your plans.
