Take it from me who was at the same place for 10 years in a similar situation (not exec level though) and it got so messy that in the end I learned loyalty gets you no where and higher ups ultimately sided with my manager. So now I'm looking for a new job and I think is the best decision bc my growth was very stunted where I am anyway. Reporting into a manager who doesn't do anything but block ideas and push their own agenda that doesn't align with the business was entirely frustrating. I put up with it for 2 years and lost growth opportunities in the process. Do what's best for you. I say take the role for the title on the resume and start looking for a new job

While a good boss is important, it sounds like you already have to work with them. At least do it with the title and then you have that on your resume.
Take the position and go above your new boss if you need help.
I agree with S1 but also be prepared to change roles or job if things don't work out.
I really struggle with this. I don’t think it’s a good look either to have to constantly go above an execs head (again these are really high levels) .
Which is what gives me pause in taking this role. I also don’t really want to leave the company. My experience is deep enough that I still occasionally am getting reach outs from other companies for executive roles in this discipline. I just don’t necessarily want to leave this company yet. I’m so torn about this. A good boss is important for success.
… we worked together today on some projects and they have either ignored my input or railroaded over needs that I have called out. I so want to take this role because of the scarcity of this level of position. On paper, I would likely be crazy to not take this role, but the type of boss that I report to is important to me, and I need to respect them.
Will I be considered dead in the water if I don’t show initiative to take this here? I’m thinking of going to the bosses boss if I don’t take it and giving them the background on why I don’t think this would be the right place for me, but still relaying to them my ambitions but also be upfront about reasons for not taking the role. Help!
What are the reasons for the lack of respect for the person this role would report to? Is it purely because of their lack of expertise in this area or lack of experience in the company since they are new? Also you chose to post this question in female bosses group so I am wondering how much does gender matter here? Is the person you would report to happen to be a male or female? What about the hiring manager?
I was simply trying to rule out power struggle with gender. That’s all, which can often be an underlying theme. I’m glad you see it’s irrelevant as well.
So in a twist, had a conversation earlier this week with the hiring manager in which I thought they were going to give me the role talk about the salary, etc. I was told that “I should apply to the role“, and they want to do a serious consideration of people from the outside as well. I was also asked if I would consider a lateral move and to do the role while they complete the process. Are you kidding me? I’m good enough to do it temporarily, but I’m not good enough to have it given to me?!?!
I’m so furious I don’t even know what to think. Additionally, so insulting since my frameworks were used by the new person in this role in their presentations to the CFO etc. because they have no experience in this discipline.
Now I need to decide if I even want to go through the interview process and formally apply for the role. I feel like this is a lose lose situation at this point.
