I heard that interviewers grade female applicants unfavorably if they come across as serious. But score men higher the less the smile. Does anyone know if that bias is true?

"If they're serious", "if they smile", "if they comb their hair". Sounds like generalized nonsense.

I think it depends on the person. I’ve heard that wearing makeup, and having a polished appearance is favorable… And in general, I do think I see that reflected across senior leaders at the companies I’ve worked for.

It probably depends

like

But depends on what?

depends on culture of organization. Be yourself, be professional and keep your focus in the results you're going to deliver. On calls I might tie my hair back but that's about it

Same goes for having kids. If you have kids as a woman = "she'll be taking a lot of unplanned time off", if you have kids as a man = "he's a responsible family man"

like

That's weird if true. Easy solution, why mention it at all? It's none of your employers business if you have kids, are married, etc.

I interview dozens to hundreds each year (probably thousands at this point). Never once inquired on a candidates relationship status, kids, etc.

That's highly unprofessional and in some cases illegal (depends on the question) plus it puts your company at risk for a lawsuit.

If the question is not directly related to their skills, experience, or abilitiy to do the job then don't ask it.

Is bias and sexism rampant in the corporate hiring process? Duh.

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

Hi everyone, a question to the tech industry at large.

Why are people so hesitant to hire disabled candidates?
