I just got a new job offer that is a good career pivot towards a specialty I’ve always wanted. The salary is a bit more than what I’m making (but not considerably more). Afraid of making this leap during a global economic downturn. I’m pretty safe in my current role, but I’ve plateaued and and have not loved the work for a while now (even got to switch clients and still not satisfied). Any thoughts on waiting out covid in a safe but loveless role vs venturing out in the WFH unknown?

Congrats OP~ Go for the WFH unknown towards the specialty you've AlWAYS wanted and make more money but importantly, more short- and long-term happiness. Vaccines and stimulus checks are just about here anyway. Your new job offer is your ticket to starting off 2021 with some positive energy and not just surviving. Good luck! ✌️

Thank you C1 for bringing the energy boost we all need today!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️

And good luck OP!!! Take that opportunity with all you got and go rock it!! 😊😊😊

The one thing I have learnt is that no job is ''safe''... go for it. Its more money and importantly, as you say a step in the right direction career wise.

1000% agree. I was laid-off in June from an organization that is known for its stability and employee longevity. I thought I would be safe for at least another month, but nope!

I made the jump during covid. It was hard and stressful. It stimulated growth by pushing me out my comfort zone. I'm sure when I look back at this experience, it'll be something I'm proud I did.

Make the jump. And for a little inspo.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I need you to go for it. If you don’t go for it now, when will you? If you wait, there will always be a new reason not to.

Start living your life in hope, instead of in fear. Don’t deny yourself this new happiness. You deserve it.

You got this!! 💪🏼🙌🏼

A lot of unknowns. But I'd say follow your heart, bet on yourself and go for it. They're hiring in all this mess, so they're likely in good shape for the future.

like

You will land on your feet and be okay either way. If you take the risk and you get let go, you’ll find a way to move forward. Try not to torment yourself over the choice. You can only know what you feel now, not how this will pan out. I would say go!

How I learned this: I took a leap right before COVID to what I thought was my client side dream job and I was part of an unfortunately timed restructure and I was laid off due to no fault of my own. I was so heartbroken for a month and then when I realized I wasn’t making progress moping a contract role fell into my lap. The contract role ended up getting me back on my feet and reminding me I’m good at what I do. It’s looking like I might be able to stay here til I get the vaccine and I’m getting hit up for a few other cool roles. You will land on your feet or find your way back there no matter the situation. Things feel so much less scary now that I’ve been laid off and gotten back up!

Are you single or do you have a family to support? If the latter, job safety is good given the circumstances.

Most economic damage to agencies has already occurred. If they are hiring you at the end of 2020, you are budgeted into next year. Things can always change, but most organizations have a 2021 roadmap, which includes worst-case scenario planning. The market across the board is picking back up, and brands are inking those 2021 contracts.

Go for it! If it’s what you’ve always wanted to do, even if the worst happens and this opportunity falls apart, it’ll be easier to convince the next company that they should hire you since you’ll be able to point to experience in this specific area. If you have the opportunity to narrow that gap and show “proof” that you’re qualified for this role, I’d do it for sure.

It can be tough to make a pivot in a direction you want — you found a way to do it with more money? GO FOR IT! 🥂

Go. Worst case scenario, you can come back. There’s no longer a requirement for anyone to have stayed in advertising their whole career, especially strategists.

But I don’t think you will regret it at all.

Update? What will it be???

Go for it! It’s a pay increase, a career path you want and you’ll be starting the new year off right! Win-win.

Would love some insight on how you went from an HR assistant/coordinator to an HR Generalist. I’ve been in the HR world for 8 years, and only in the last 2-3 have I really done real HR work.
