I keep hearing mixed opinions about networking in tech job searches, where some people say it is absolutely essential and others say they got hired without it. I swear I go to those events and it’s just all people looking for jobs. From your experience, is networking actually necessary right now or just helpful? And how would you realistically start if you do not know anyone in the industry?

Why is it one or the other ? Networking won’t guarantee a job, but it helps immensely if someone inside can vouch for you. Don’t you think that if someone can ping the HM directly is going to be more impactful than you banking on your resume passing the ATS and then less than 1 min that recruiter will spend on it ? If you don’t have anyone, then apply directly and may be it will get you something.

Networking is hard, it requires earning trust. You don’t want someone to click the button, you need them to be an advocate for you. So starting point should be people from your ex firm (past or present) , even if you don’t know them , you can use the connection. Another way is to send request for informal chat (primary purpose for why LI exist). Those chats should start with learning about them vs you asking them for referral (they all know why you are reaching out, just need to make it about them )

Feeling grateful & proud as I reached my goal ($50K by 25) 5 months early. But I can’t help feeling a bit overwhelmed. In the lifelong scheme of things, $50K doesn’t seem like much. I worked really hard and sacrificed a lot (including mental health) to get to this but it seems a little tiring knowing I still have so long to go. I recently moved out and in with my BF so my expenses are split, but nonetheless they are still expenses. Any tips on continuing this journey and keeping the drive?

At what point are you too specialized to lateral to internal audit? Hi fishes, I want to move to management consulting. Current role is an internal data science consultant for driving OpEx.
Background: MS in Statistics from tier-1 Institute, 3 YoE across Bank of America and UBS, based in India.

Is it possible without a) going for an MBA b) Starting from the bottom at Undergrad analyst level.
Would ideally target pre-MBA Associate level (one step short of post MBA level).

Any leads/strategy to crack this would be greatly appreciated.

How does contract to hire work? If I’m offered $37/hr on w2 for 3 months and then possibly a permanent position, how much can I expect to get annually as a full time company employee as a BI data analyst II? I have a M.S. and certificates in DA but this will be my first job as DA.
I prefer working for what is offered on contract without negotiating, and then negotiate when I transition into the company itself so I have a better chance of getting the contract position and show my skills.
