I know there are a ton of posts on billable hours requirements at many firms but do any other mid/senior level associates spend a TON of time on non-billables - group/dept./firm meetings; training; events; business development (writing articles, doing webinars, networking; outside association events); etc.? I feel like the number of hours spent on this is lost in the discussion sometimes and I know I spend an additional 300-400 hours on this per year. Anyone else?

I say no to a lot of this. I'm not working for free.

Yes, I did almost 800 non-billable hours my first year after lateraling. At first, I just needed something to do, then it became a big burden on top of a full case load. My firm only counts up to 100 hours of pro bono and diversity hours (total, not 100 for both). I’m trying to say “no” more often, but that’s a work in progress.

like

Our firm gives up to 250 hours of credit for non-client billables (this includes pro bono, d&i and recruiting, and even BD). I've gotten hours credited for CLE prep and teaching, articles, interviewing, etc. and I haven't yet hit the threshold (choose not to; I do very little pro bono though). Networking/outside association events... Are those required by your firm? Sounds like something you choose to do.

That said, meetings etc. aren't credited unfortunately.

Yes, a good 700-800 hours worth of trainings, client development, matter openings, billing, etc.

like

yes! i’m on the hiring and diversity committee. it’s fun & fulfilling but a huge time suck.

I understand A1’s point and OP, but while it’s “lost”, aren’t you building connections with leadership - does it help with partner track?

like

Yes, definitely. I was more so bringing up the topic so people who may be asking about hours requirements understand that in most cases it’s not just the 2000+ billable hours that are required but that there are a host of other hours to be “worked” as well. For me, this means working 2500 ish rather than 2100-2200.

I spend around 100 hours a year on nonbilllable work which includes all recruiting activities, internal meetings, trainings, writing articles and even client-mandated trainings. my bonus is tied to hitting 2000 hours. 🤡🤡

Recently lateraled as a public defender in HCOL area to ID in LCOL area for $$$. I’ve been at the job a little over a month. My concerns are that I’m getting very little guidance or mentorship, and I’m worried about not hitting billable hours (2000 requirement but I am just over 80 for the first month). I am only in charge of a ~5 cases atm and struggle with figuring out the next steps, etc. I’ve met all my deadlines that have come up. Thoughts or advice?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
