I looked at some DoD regulations and saw a "Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal." Has anyone put in the paperwork for this? I feel a little strange since I would qualify, but it seems a little self-promotional to nominate myself for a medal. At the same time, if I don't tell anyone about my volunteer work deliberately, how would anyone know I am eligible? I want to avoid drawing criticism from my squadron peers and supervisors, who seem biased against those who volunteer outside of work.

There is a certain air of respect you get when you become a military professional. As long as you earn that respect, of course. But I like it, it feels good!
