I love international tax (in core) and don’t mind compliance at all but it’s been nearly 100% of what I do. Any ways of balancing out with more structuring/planning?

Some background: there’s only 3 of us IT locally and with the departure of our SM, the little structuring/planning work I do see will probably dry up when they leave. Do I network with other bigger offices to pick up that kind of work?

I’m not at Deloitte so won’t be familiar with how your core international group is organized, but is there a group within international that focuses on mergers and acquisitions? If so, maybe you could do a rotation within that group. A rotation with Deloitte’s WNT group might help you get more exposure to international tax planning and restructuring issues. Is there a larger IT group within your business unit that you could network with and collaborate on other work? I think you are correct that it will take some networking.

Talk to your partner and resource manager.

I presume there is a partner covering your market. Connect with that individual and tell them what you would like. Sounds like opportunities will be missed in your market or the planning work will be shifted to a larger office unless you speak up

I am writing this message besides the staff group of EY GDS. Specifically Staff -1 at assurance level. I would request everyone to spare few minutes and read it -

Wanted to bring out that staff-1's are paid peanuts (3.33L CTC) please don't expect them to slog 12-13 hours. They don't have enough motivation or incentives to work that long. Seniors,AM's and Managers should be more kind and explain the work to them clearly rather than making last minute changes.
