I need help. I CANNOT stand the partner I work for. They are horrid. It’s not even their personality, it’s their work style that is absolutely atrocious and I can’t take it anymore. What is the nicest way to get moved to another group/team/whatever? There’s plenty of people I like working with at my firm and who seem to like working with me. But I need to move immediately to preserve my sanity

Well immediately likely won’t happen, but what I did (more with dealing with annoying senior associates when I was junior) is look for work elsewhere with more powerful partners. Take on more stuff with people you like or can at least work with, and decline work from the other person. I suppose the only other option is to leave.

Do you have any corporate communication or HR person in the firm at all? do you have a special site at your law firm to apply for in-house jobs at all? You see I might have even suggested well if you have attorney that you really like to work with there perhaps you could simply confidentially speak to one of them after hours or drop off a confidential note in a sealed envelope to the person, but it’s very important. Remember that I totally hear you. It’s toxic you gotta get out of there so if this doesn’t pan out of you staying with the firm, then you need to start looking for another healthier situation for you, which is going to make you so much happier but how you word your complain you see they still all stick together I mean and that’s no offense to attorneys. I’ve worked for great lawyers and it makes a big difference so you could address it confidentially to even The head partner of the firm but it sounds like you’re already working with 1 well that would have to be your decision but all I’m saying is

Write a very short, but effective yet professional note, simply stating that you have so loved your time here with the firm, and you would like to remain with the firm you feel that your work has been supportive, and you are reaching out simply because you want to know if there are any other available teams that you might be able to work with that would be more compatible to everyone involved .

No one likes to work in a toxic environment so with a little finesse, you’re looking to expand your horizons with the Fuhrman was wondering if there might be a team that might be a better fit you’ll find the way presented like that because I understand all your complaints, but if you make it a complaint letter it just hurts you so think about it. You can do this. I have faith.

The bigger partner always wins. Look for one at your firm who you like and try to start doing work for them and really wow them. It’ll open the lines of communication and hopefully give you the chance to start a dialogue about opportunities.

Wait- are you talking about one (1) person, or multiple people? You say you can’t stand your boss, but then talk about “they.” If you don’t like your boss, ask for a reassignment after you finish a project. If you don’t like several partners, get your resume out. In any case, learn some grammar and write clearly.

This is such a sad hill to die on

I get it, "they" meaning "that person" in this case. I have used "they" to refer to an individual I might not want others to know the gender of in a sensitive situation. I think you are using it in the context of a self-protective device. Totally get it. I love the comment about intentionally underperforming and "turning things in late." I would also throw in coming in late and leaving early. If THAT doesn't get you fired, I don't know what will. Good luck, sounds dreadful and toxic!

Fighting fire with fire 🔥? Never wins.. i’m sorry, and I want to say something very respectful to all government employees whether it be county or state or federal.

I know so many that are so dedicated and effective take action to make sure that everything within their department or the focus that they were hired for is secure and growing with success .

However, I also remember the ones that have failed their positions, their country, their county their state because they were told or learned or were taught the same thing that you’re talking about that was laziness with indignant behavior , they were told don’t come in here. Don’t come in here. They would say this to the newbies the ones that were not the good ones they would say don’t come in here and try to make a great impression by working really fast and getting all these things done because we are going to be here for the next 25 years to retire so you need to be like us just don’t care just be here to save up those years for your pension, do you really wanna live your life like that I honestly sense from you that you believe in doing the right thing and that you have been doing the right thing but with no support around you that not only feel the same way but also give team support

I can tell you from experience great teams do amazing things teams that exist basically in silence and just go day by day waiting waiting waiting and when it finally gets there some of them, I think they did the right thing actually because they obviously didn’t get it, but the ones that really applied themselves and showed initiative and embraced their company When it was the right team it’s priceless. It will carry you with grace and confidence, conviction and joy for the rest of your life.

One day when you retire, you will brag about it or when I worked with this law from her when I worked for this partner and our team that we had was just amazing

You are amazing. Do not let evil or jealous or inferior insecure people pull you down because they think in doing so they’ll suck all the goodness out of you and they’ll take over it won’t work.

Please reach out to your peeps, reach out to the people that really matter in your life just to hug you and behind you and invite you to lunch. You don’t need to tell them that your story you are going to rise above this.

That saying of rise above it, I learned many years ago won’t go into all the details but when you do like you need to now, you will do it with respect to yourself with a hug to yourself with a reach out to others that see your goodness

During these hard times that we’ve had a lot of people use the word vibe like I get a good vibe there. I don’t get a good vibe over there. I get a bad vibe in that one in particular.

That’s The Universe. That’s the store that’s a cosmos. That’s God that everybody that ever loved you that every boss you’ve had that’s yourself that is your conscious. That’s your intuition.

Do not listen to others if that you know instinctually they are cheating now they’re bringing you into their cocoon when evil starts it grows. Don’t let it in the door.

Been there. I did whatever it took to conclude certain cases quicker. I declined future work with that partner and worked with others instead. It wasn’t an immediate process. But it helped my sanity because I couldn’t stand that person’s work style at all.

you can't make your own exit within the firm. who can help you build one?

Really depends on your group and firm structure, practice area, and so on. Sometimes this can be easy. Other circumstances render it impossible.

About to turn down a job offer that would nearly double my salary after speaking to several former associates of the firm and hearing some not so great things.
