You’ll never get this time back with your toddler. If you’re “managing” the project (even in air quotes), the project should still be staffed appropriately so you have someone below you to be the arms and legs. You shouldn’t be managing AND doing - that’s what’s going to lead to burnout. I think you should take the managerial role, but communicate clearly that you need support and tell them what you need so that you are NOT working 60+ hours a week. Also, this is likely an opportunity for someone below you to also step into YOUR old role, so pick someone strong and empower them to support you. This can be a win win if you play it right. Even if you don’t plan to stay post your next mat leave, leaving with a higher title and managerial experience will position you for the future. But don’t sacrifice your life - do it right.
I have a team of juniors under me so I won’t be doing everything by myself but 60+ hours will not likely to go down considering the director leaving was pulling the same hours and already had a manager (me) which I won’t have
If you’re gonna get pregnant and leave anyways then why bust your butt for a promo that won’t hold value in the long run?
Mainly worried for the longer gap in resume and having lower pay opportunities once I join back to workforce cause I’ll look for opportunities in industry
Tell your team you need another manager or Sr looking to step up underneath you. I think you stick around but feel free to look for other opportunities.
Agree with this. You can’t guarantee exactly when you’ll get pregnant. Since you don’t plan to stick around, you shouldn’t worry about trying to “take one for the team” and burn yourself out. Get help, get pregnant, and then leave.
Agree with CS1 - use the leverage you have now to get some help. If it's a relatively short period of time (<6 months), I'd just power through. Would be nice to have that promotion in your back pocket for in the future. What's your plan after your next maternity leave? This promotion might help you land in a better spot.
