The ones who can handle it usually have a safety net. Huge savings, a spouse with a stable income, parents to fall back on, something. Or they just have insane risk tolerance. I don't at all and would hate living like that. To each their own.

Even then so, with the current economy it’s so uncertain when you’d find your next gig again. The savings would really be key I couldn’t possibly rely on others
This is so true! I was on my own for a while; definitely made money being by myself. A company came and offered me a great deal plus equity; I took the offer without hesitation. The stress of being the decision maker who - with one bad choice - could completely ruin multiple families is not to be taken lightly.
Indeed, kudos to those who stick it out and build something large for the rest of us to have peace of mind.

I was self-employed for about 2 years. Freedom was great, but the stress and never really knowing was not. There is always uncertainty, but it’s different when it’s squarely on your shoulders.
