Not at all. My goal is to make as much money while putting in as little work as possible.
This should be everyone’s goal. It’s advertising.
Nope. The pandemic has been eye opening. As cliché as it sounds, life is short and what we do is so dumb and unimportant. I gave most of my 20s and now nearly all my 30s to my career. I’m not doing that anymore.
Also - I hate the "we're going to set you up with a home office! Laptops and chairs for everyone! Aren't we generous and caring?!" Like, cool? And thank you? You literally have to provide the laptops for security of files and data, and for us to actually WFH... Please, for the love of cheese, stop acting like you're doing your employees a favor 😠🙈

So what if I care?
Absolutely, I do. As a people manager, I care a ton about the people who work under me and things we can accomplish together. I love my job. Maybe I'm just lucky.
If you don’t care why are you even doing this? You can make so much more money in tech. Or as a consultant. Or even in a back office finance job. The only reason you should work in advertising is because you love creativity and the work.
I’m considering a move to web dev. Sick of figuring out what shit needs to look like, and just want to “build” stuff. I’ve been Upping my skills lately, but also figuring out to jump without taking a salary hit from my 15 yrs as an art director, to a low end dev job. Can’t afford to take a big hit.
A perspective from a once Ad warrior:
I devoted all I had to the work, 34 years, almost 24/7, always on and always ready to tackle any and all projects. All I cared about was the work. Thought about the work at work, home, even on my honeymoon, ( along with honeymoon clothes, I packed my One Show Annual out of fear of being disconnected for two weeks of fun in the sun).
I slept in the office when pitched were in high gear, I had forged a relationship with the town car driver who picked me up at 2-3a.m. to take me home for 4 hours of sleep only to return the next day and repeat for next 3 months. I saw more of my limo driver than my own family. All in the pursuit of breakthrough work for clients that wanted middle road ideas in the end. Not all clients but enough to make you question your purpose in a process that did not encourage the work you strived to do.
But I loved the creation and execution of campaigns, it was a great rush seeing something that lived inside your head come alive in the outside world.
In the end, your salary, and age make you a target unless you make it up to the mountain top as a CCO or equivalent.
In my end I got a hug, some tearful goodbyes, got gyped out of 4 weeks accrued vacation, but did get decent severance and some drinks with the CCO who was more upset then I.
Enjoy the time you have. Be smart about the work life balance thing, but remember there are no retirement parties in advertising, just tearful goodbyes, some hugs, and if your lucky all your accrued vacation time as part of your severance.
Have they ever?
Lol no
Nope idc at all. My job is merely something I do 9-5 M-F to provide me with funds to do the things I actually like.
No
I don’t really give a flying shit about my work. Every now and then I’ll get something that’s “new” and I’ll work hard on it, but 90% of the time I’m phoning it in. Been at my gig for 13yrs. I’m basically in it for the money and job security and flexibility, and I like my team. But if someone offered me a chunk more $$$, I’d probably fly.
I care a lot :) i had fun in my early career days but felt like I wasn't contributing. I found an industry where I see my value add, so now I care 😘
No, it’s a pay check. It’s not saving the world. I’m glad it is a job that I have been doing since college and it’s better than flipping burgers, but I don’t care, and make sure to tell my kids to make a better living. Too many dirty, back stabbing people in the corporate world. Especially in advertising, and age discrimination is very much alive in this industry, so don’t get old if you are a women and plan to work here a long time.
