That’s understandable, odd time for entry-level jobs. Most require a lot more experience than entry-level employees should have. Keep working on your portfolio, and you can try to get freelance, smaller company projects, or look at related roles slightly outside of graphic design.
That’s great! There are a lot of non-traditional paths, so getting the chance to have that conversation with somebody can be a wonderful insight.
Agreed.
1. Get real projects that you can include in your portfolio to showcase your skills (even if they are low paying - you need real work). If possible, focus them on the industries you want to work in (hint: finance and healthcare pay more and have more jobs because everyone wants to do agency and fashion).
2. Network, network, network. Every job I’ve had in my career has come from my network. Have informational coffee dates with people you admire and respect, go to design meetups, etc
3. Learn AI. The designers who can use AI in their workflows will be the ones left when the dust settles. Figma Make is a startlingly powerful tool and is going to be table stakes for UX/UI designers (and product managers) soon.
Good luck, work hard, get out there, and stay optimistic.
Thank you for the advice! For you first suggestion, what is your opinion on creating your own projects to showcase in a portfolio? Like making a design in a specific area you want to work in but may not have the current job in. I do have some work projects I will be putting in a portfolio, but since I am starting out I was wondering if it would be ok to create things to showcase my skills but don’t have a client for.
I will start networking more! I actually do have a lunch call set up with someone who graduated with the same major and minor as me to get there advice on navigating the work force.
Great advice on Ai, my professor actually said something similar to us during my classes that jobs are going to start having that as a job requirement so it’s a good thing to know. I’ll look into figma, I’ve never really used it before but I’ve been seeing a lot about it.

Personally I’d look into specializing in a specific area in design. Just being a pure “graphic designer” is sort of going into a dying field.
Get it. Been in the same spot. Terra Incognita. Apply like crazy. Build a fresh book - and really shake it up. If you can afford it, or have a place to crash - get the heck out of there. Fast.
YOUR power -- comes from being a rare creative bird and/or, from having multiple job offers. Be the bird! FLY!
P.S. Just read the comments. Like everyone is jumping on Ai. Duhhh...AI stuff is lame. Skynet, ala Terminator. You, me, all of us, have to be better than Ai. Smarter. More strategic. Ai is by definition ---- artificial! Be human. Ai is not.
