I recently realized that if I changed jobs today, I’d likely have to choose between a fully remote role and a role that requires significantly more time in the office. Remote work offers flexibility and more personal time, but there can also be benefits to being in the office, visibility, relationship building, and career opportunities.
For those who have experienced both, has your view on remote vs. in-office work changed?

I think this is just personal preference. I would flounder at a fully remote job as a single individual and find it very isolating (I left a job for this exact reason), but someone with small kids might find it necessary. All things being equal (pay, team, culture), and if you’ve never worked fully remote before and are looking to advance in the position, I would lean toward the in person role. But, if you’re aware of the pros and cons of remote work and still prefer the flexibility over everything else, and feel you can still meaningfully advance in the role remotely, then I would go with that. Should you have the opportunity to choose, you will just have to ask yourself where your values align and which set up works best for you.

This is very helpful. Thank you. I have been doing a 5 days in office role now and it drains me so much, I think a hybrid might be the best but I was not able to get one even though hybrid seems more common than fully remote. I haven’t done a fully remote role in my career, but really wanted to try.

I went from being partially remote to fully remote, and since I made that change, I am happy every day. Not having to commute is the biggest relief and having peace and quiet in my home office allows for more focus and concentration on my tasks, research and drafting. Not having a lot of office chatter and unnecessary disruption that comes from being in an office is the absolute best. If I need to confer with someone on my team, we have a call or zoom.

I am fully remote. It is amazing. Fuck the commute and old partners going up and down the hallways to see what you are doing.

I am happy fully remote work for you!

Echoing above, I think it's dependent on personal circumstances such as your personality, your city's traffic/cost of living, whether you're a caregiver or need flexibility, what your responsibilities are outside of work, etc. As a parent who commutes 45-55 min one way, I'm looking for remote so that I can be more present for my family even that means I'm "held back" in my career. Others won't have to make that decision. Wish the legal field had more options available for people to choose what's best for them

Yes, the options are limited

I haven't been fully in office since Covid, but recently started a fully remote role. With young kids, it really is the only way I could continue full time work and keep my sanity. I sometimes miss the comradry I had when I was a young lawyer full time in office but certainly not at the expense of being able to spend more time with my kids over a commute

Yes, I understand with young kids

Do yourself a major favor, get an offer in writing first before you assume that you wont have a problem finding a new job.

I already got the offer and had to choose

Hybrid works the best for me so far
