Yes but when no one has time to teach them, what then? I have not seen on-the-job-training in years so the people who survive in tech are the ones who come with a surplus of hard and soft skills.
This! In our jobs we have fundamentals, but there is not a single day where you don't see anything unexpected or learn something new. I'd say that more than soft skills and hard skills you need to be able to focus, be a good observer and think through. Then communication and understanding are also important to work with other people and understand requirements.

I totally agree. Teaching tools is easy compared to teaching how to navigate people, feedback, or ambiguity. That said, I’ve also seen roles where soft skills weren’t enough without baseline technical fluency. It really depends on the team’s existing strengths.
It depends. Obviously I can't hire an Art History major and put them in a React TypeScript role. I would say that the majority of our developers are non-native English speakers, so they may not have the soft skills but they're good listeners and task doers. Thats why I said depends on the role.
